When to Replace Your Concrete Driveway
Concrete driveways are built to last, but Dallas weather, soil movement, and years of daily use eventually take their toll. Some damage can be repaired, but certain signs indicate that a full replacement is the smarter long-term investment.
1. Wide or Deep Cracks
Hairline cracks are normal and can be sealed. But cracks wider than a quarter inch, cracks that go all the way through the slab, or cracks that are getting bigger over time signal structural failure. In Dallas, these often result from the expansive clay soils shifting beneath the slab as moisture levels change seasonally.
2. Sunken or Uneven Sections
If sections of your driveway have sunk, tilted, or separated from each other, the base beneath the concrete has failed. This creates trip hazards and allows water to pool and accelerate damage. While slab leveling can work in some cases, severely sunken driveways usually need full replacement for a lasting fix.
3. Extensive Spalling and Surface Deterioration
Spalling is when the top layer of concrete flakes, chips, or peels away, exposing the rough aggregate underneath. A few small spall spots can be patched, but widespread surface deterioration means the concrete is breaking down and resurfacing alone will not solve the underlying issue.
4. Multiple Patches and Prior Repairs
If your driveway already has several patches, crack fills, and previous repair work, adding more patches delivers diminishing returns. A patchwork driveway also hurts curb appeal. At some point, a clean replacement is more cost-effective and looks far better.
5. Drainage Problems
If water pools on your driveway or flows toward your garage or foundation, the slab may have settled unevenly over time. Poor drainage accelerates damage to both the driveway and your home. A replacement allows your contractor to grade the surface correctly and direct water where it belongs.
Repair vs. Replace: The Decision
Repair makes sense when damage is limited to a small area, the slab is still level, and the rest of the surface is in good shape.
Replacement makes sense when you see multiple signs from the list above, the driveway is 20+ years old, or the cost of continued repairs approaches the cost of a new pour.
